Highlights and accomplishments of 2010
  • The frequency of claims was higher than expected in 2010 based on policyholders' experience from prior years. Our claims representatives managed more than 12,000 claims in 2010, including both insured and self-insured claims.
  • Nearly 40 percent savings in medical billings was achieved through specialized medical services. Our physicians, nurses and others achieved additional savings through better medical outcomes and return to work.
  • Our in-house legal firm, Lynn Scharfenberg & Associates, worked directly with claims representatives on more than 2,500 claims, helping to head off litigation and bring them to fair and least-cost resolutions. Our attorneys continued a high, 60 percent win rate on contested cases.
  • For the 12th year, SFM ranked No. 1 among large insurers for prompt action on lost-time claims, according to an annual Minnesota state report. SFM's responsiveness on claims helps control costs.
