An educational resource for schools served by SFM

Top four resolutions for 2008

The holidays are past. '08 lies ahead. Why not start the year with a few business-smart resolutions? Other school officials are saving time and expense by resolving to follow these four best practices in 2008. You can, too.
  1. Shave at least one day off each lost-time claim. Your goal is to get injured employees back to work as soon as they're medically able, even if it's to a lighter-duty job at less pay. You'll make a significant impact on your workers' compensation costs.

  2. Report work injuries to SFM within 24 hours. Reporting on time gets claims off to a good start. Make sure your staff knows what to do when an injury occurs. Educate teachers and supervisors about how to report and to whom. Follow SFM's "Five-Step Response" to simplify the process.

  3. Report work injuries online. Eliminate the hassle of filling out a First Report of Injury by hand. Go to www.sfmic.com to fill out and submit the form.

  4. Jump start the year by revitalizing your safety committee. Encourage the safety committee to eliminate hazards and promote wellness to create an overall healthy work environment.

Promote healthy lifestyles at school

  • Set an example. Provide fruits and healthy snacks at meetings rather than fatty treats.

  • Give discounts at the cafeteria salad bar for employees that choose this option.

  • Start a walking club for before school, on lunch break or after school.

  • Encourage frequent hand washing.

  • Provide information on local smoking cessation programs.

Keep an eye out

Even equipment as simple as a tabletop paper cutter can be hazardous. SFM recently received a claim for a severed finger tendon as a result of an exposed blade on the paper cutter. The employee was clearing paper from beneath the cutter and sliced his hand because the blade went beyond the deck of the cutter due to wear.

Prevent these kinds of injuries by encouraging employees to inspect and maintain equipment. Tell employees what the hazards are so they are aware.
