The SFM Foundation recently awarded higher education scholarships to 11 Minnesota and Wisconsin students of parents killed or seriously injured on the job.
The 11 recipients were from 36 applications received. Three awards involved parents who died in work accidents, according to Dave Kaiser, executive director of the Foundation.
The Foundation Board approved distributing $18,500 to the 11 scholarship recipients for the 2011-12 school year. Their scholarships will be automatically renewed each year for up to five years of schooling and

In its first three years, the Foundation has awarded a total of 30 multiple-year scholarships.

Rising claim costs associated with permanent total disability claims was a focus of
discussion at the recent Workers' Compensation Seminar sponsored by Peddicord Wharton, a Des Moines law firm that SFM partners with.
According to SFM staff attending the seminar, one factor driving PTD claims costs in Iowa is a recent trend in which the employee is able to petition the court to force a lump sum payment of their benefits through the date of their life expectancy. It is called a "partial commutation of benefits."
In addition, recent Iowa state regulations have capped the level of the discount permitted when a lump sum payment on a PTD claim is paid by settlement, or when a partial commutation of benefits is ordered,
further increasing the cost of these claims.

The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation recently issued a warning to employers to be aware of companies marketing and selling federal and state employment posters.
The DLR said the companies use scare tactics about potential fines for not posting required state and federal posters.
The DLR said employers in South Dakota can order the six federal labor law posters
and two state posters at no charge from any South Dakota DLR office.
