Top three resolutions for 2009

Why not start the new year with a few business-smart resolutions? Save time and expense by resolving to follow these three best practices in 2009.

1.

Shave at least one day off each lost-time claim. Your goal is to get injured employees back to work as soon as they're medically able, even if it's to a lighter-duty job at less pay. Do so by:

  • Planning ahead. You may be able to return the employee to work within the three-day waiting period and substantially reduce the impact on your work comp premium.
  • Having a transitional job lists ready. Transitional jobs enable the employee to begin working again as soon as possible within medical restrictions.
  • Keeping communication open. Show concern. Answer questions. Tell the employee you want her back.
2.

Report work injuries to SFM online, within 24 hours. Reporting online is the fastest and easiest way to report. Reporting on time gets claims off to a good start. Make sure your staff knows what to do when an injury occurs. Follow SFM's "Five-Step Response" to simplify the process.

3.

Jump start the year by revitalizing your safety committee. Encourage the safety committee to eliminate hazards and promote wellness to create an overall healthy work environment.

Promote healthy lifestyles at school by:

  • Setting an example. Provide healthy snacks at meetings rather than fatty treats.
  • Starting a stretching program. Encourage movement.
  • Encouraging frequent hand washing.
  • Providing information on smoking cessation programs and exercise classes.
