Maintaining safety with fewer resources

As the economy slows, schools are faced with sobering changes. Budget deficits are forcing many districts to rethink how they conduct day-to-day business. Among these considerations is how to maintain safety efforts.

Even for those districts committed to protecting safety budgets, sustaining current projects and launching new ones can be more difficult than it was just a few months ago. Schools affected by the downturn typically have a heightened need for safety as employees experiencing anxiety tend to be more at risk than employees who aren't.

  1. Keep communication open. Be positive, but realistic.
  2. Involve supervisors. Upper level staff should be well-informed and able to address employees concerns as well as educate them about safe procedures and equipment.

Spring is when risk exposures increase for maintenance and grounds crews who are doing out-of-the-ordinary tasks such as moving furniture, construction projects and extensive grounds work. Take care not to compromise the level of safety. Adapt the projects to the resources available.

  1. Have a plan.  Review last year's projects for successes and accidents. Don't recreate the wheel. Utilize employees with experience and knowledge.
  2. Make sure appropriate safety equipment is available. Proper equipment should remain a priority even in times of belt-tightening. Don't overlook personal protective equipment. Train employees on proper use.
  3. Educate employees about making safe choices. Explain how their behaviors can affect your district's bottom line. Encourage them to "take safety with them."

Leading safety effectively through these challenging days is important. Focusing on the principles of safety and enlisting the efforts of employees throughout the district can convey the value of safety.

Texting while driving: Is your policy up 2 d8?
