Accident analysis Q & A

How does an analysis help prevent injuries?

Accidents and illnesses don't just happen. They have causes traceable to specific sequence of events.

Unless you take steps to prevent a recurrence of these events, the potential remains for personal injury or illness to happen again. When you investigate accidents, you can learn a great deal about safety and health, and you can find new ways to make your workplace safer and more productive.

When should I analyze an accident?

Ideally, accidents should be looked into immediately. If that is impossible due to emergency situations, begin as soon as possible so the facts are still clear to those involved, witnesses have not yet influenced one another's thoughts, and the physical conditions are nearly the same as before the accident.

Who should analyze the accident?

Generally, an accident should be analyzed by a supervisor, the safety committee, management or safety personnel. If the accident is very serious, you may want to hire an outside consulting firm. You may also request the services of your SFM loss prevention or your claims representative.
