Choosing a medical provider
Using the PPO network helps control work comp costs

Through an arrangement with CorVel Corporation, SFM policyholders and their injured employees are able to access an extensive Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) network. It includes physicians of all specialties including occupational specialists, orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, physical therapists and chiropractors, and includes urgent care centers and hospitals.

Policyholders who use preferred provider organization providers receive both quality medical treatment and discounted pricing. Both help reduce claim costs. Quality treatment is important because it helps retain good employees and brings injured employees back to work as soon as they're able, reducing expensive wage-loss benefits.

If you don't have a primary provider for work comp injuries, or if your current provider doesn't provide the services that help reduce claims costs, explore the PPO network to find a provider that delivers more for less.

Tip on using CorVel's 'Provider Look-Up'

On the "Search Criteria" page, under the "Specialty" section--To get the best list of possibilities, try different options in the drop-down menu. For instance, try selecting "Occupational Medicine" or "Primary Care."

Also, try selecting the button for "Hospital or Clinic."

You can start using the network today
You don't need to wait or enroll in anything.
To use the network:

1. Look up the providers in your area.
For listings, go to CorVel's website at www.corvel.com. Click on "Provider Look-Up,"
then click "Find Providers Near You."
2.

Communicate with your employees about using providers in the network for workplace injuries. Ultimately, the decision of where to seek treatment is up to the employee. However you can let him know that PPO network providers are specialized in treating occupational injuries.

For help with channeling employees into PPO providers or if you have questions about the CorVel PPO, contact your SFM claims representative or your CorVel case manager.

Prescriptions:
An opportunity to help an employee decide where to get refills

You should encourage the employee to go to one of the pharmacies listed in a letter he will receive from SFM. The pharmacies are listed on a sheet titled "Getting prescriptions filled." The sheet also includes the employee's personalized tear-off Prescription services identification card.

By showing his card to the pharmacist when he picks up his prescription, the employee won't need to pay up front or submit paperwork to get reimbursed. Those are advantages you can mention to the employee.

Participating pharmacies include large chains like Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Target as well as many local neighborhood pharmacies. Employees can look up participating pharmacies in the "Workers' compensation" section of ExpressScripts' website.

Thanks to a special SFM arrangement, presenting the ID card at these network pharmacies will result in lower charges for pharmaceuticals--and ultimately will help control your claims costs and workers' compensation premium.
