South Dakota passes hands-free law

A new South Dakota law prohibits most handheld use of mobile devices while driving.

The law still allows drivers to use their hands to place phone calls or to text 911, but it specifically prohibits manually entering information into a GPS system and using social media sites.

Using devices in voice-operated or hands-free mode is still allowed.

The law took effect March 27.
