SFM recently hired Kate Daly as Corporate Counsel.

Prior to joining SFM, Daly served as Assistant Commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, overseeing workers’ compensation. She also previously worked as the lead work comp attorney for Hennepin County in Minnesota. Daly’s first day at SFM was Feb. 19.

“SFM is excited to bring on an attorney with Kate’s expertise in the workers’ compensation industry,” said Kathy Bray, Sr. VP and Chief Legal Officer at SFM. “Her experience in both the private and public sectors, and broad knowledge of work comp and related legislative matters, will bolster SFM as it continues to grow and provide the best outcomes for injured workers, policyholders and our agent partners.”

At SFM, Daly will handle a wide range of legal matters, including contract review, legislative work, providing general corporate legal advice for the company’s business units, and assisting with management of outside counsel and litigation.

“SFM’s reputation in the realm of workers’ compensation is unparalleled,” Daly said. “In my previous positions, I worked closely with the company and found their legal team to be outstanding, reasonable and collegial.”

Before her governmental positions, which also includes time as an assistant city attorney in St. Paul, Minn., Daly worked in workers’ compensation defense for private law firms. She has more than 20 years of experience as an attorney, mostly focused on work comp.

She is also passionate about pro bono work and helping people, citing her early career as a legal aide on the East Coast helping people cope with evictions or having their utilities cut off.

A native of Minnesota, Daly currently lives in Mendota Heights, Minn., with her husband and daughter.

“I’m excited to represent SFM as corporate counsel,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to contributing to the great legal team we have here.”
